.REALTOR is coming. Don’t miss the priority list deadline!

Recently, CREA announced that the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) was in the process of securing the top-level domain (TLD) .REALTOR, and that we had partnered with NAR to bring .REALTOR to members in both countries later this year.

Since then, we have received many great questions from members across the country.  We can group these questions into four key themes:

1.       What exactly is .REALTOR?

It all starts with The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), whose mandate is to ensure there’s only one internet:

“To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer — a name or a number. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination, we wouldn’t have one global Internet.”

In the past, ICANN has given us TLDs like .com, .org, .net and all the country specific ones like .ca.  But to further organize the internet, ICANN will release more than a 1,000 TLDs within the next couple years.  So .clothes, .books, .apartments, and so on.  Even .ninja will soon be available (I have to admit, I like the sound of PatrickPichette.ninja).
