Around the county: REALTORS® laud Lakeshore’s housing incentives

The Windsor-Essex County Association of Realtors (WECAR™) is supporting the Municipality of Lakeshore’s newest plan to incentivize residential housing.

“Across Windsor and Essex County, families are struggling to achieve the Canadian dream of home ownership,” Julianna Biondo, president of WECAR™, said in a release Tuesday. “Economic uncertainty and trade disruptions have made it more challenging and costly for home builders to get new projects underway and more expensive for home buyers.

“In this environment, municipalities must be bold in their work to get more affordable homes built faster.”

Biondo said WECAR™ “ strongly supports” Lakeshore’s new housing incentives program.

“This new grant program will improve affordability by enabling more missing-middle housing and additional residential units within existing neighbourhoods. At a time when Essex County and other municipalities are debating higher housing taxes and development charges, Lakeshore is choosing a more constructive path that encourages new housing supply rather than pricing it out of reach.”

WECAR™ said Housing prices in Lakeshore have increased by nearly 80 per cent since 2019 and new housing starts have fallen sharply.

“Programs like this send a clear signal that Lakeshore is serious about supporting attainable housing options and ensuring local families have real opportunities to live and stay in the community.”
